Sigourney Weaver x 2

February 23, 2008

The only movie I had ever seen Sigourney Weaver in (that I remember) is the fan-favorite, Dave. Today, I had the “pleasurable” experience of seeing her in 2 more movies.

First off – Be Kind, Rewind

Jack Black and Mos Def star in Be Kind Rewind, a unique comedy from Academy Award-winning writer/director Michel Gondry (Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). Black stars as a loveable loser stuck in a life that’s too small for his big dreams. But when he unintentionally erases all the tapes in a video store where his best friend (Mos Def) works, he devises a plan to satisfy the store’s few loyal customers by re-creating and re-filming every movie they decide to rent. Be Kind Rewind features a cast that also includes Danny Glover, Melonie Diaz and Mia Farrow. It is scheduled for a February 22, 2008 release.

Overall, good movie. I enjoyed the remakes of such films as Ghostbusters, The Lion King, and Men In Black. The best, however, was Rush Hour 2.

Sigourney Weaver played some lawyer person who destroys all the “Sweded” videos that Jack and Mos created. Performance = 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Second movie – Vantage Point

Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quaid) and Kent Taylor (Matthew Fox), are two Secret Service agents assigned to protect President Ashton (William Hurt) at a landmark summit on the global war on terror. When President Ashton is shot moments after his arrival in Spain, chaos ensues and disparate lives collide. In the crowd is Howard Lewis (Forest Whitaker) an American tourist video-taping the historic event to show his kids when he returns home. Also, there is Rex (Sigourney) an American TV news producer who is reporting on the conference. It’s only as we follow each person’s perspective of the same 15 minutes prior to and immediately after the shooting that the terrifying truth behind the assassination attempt is revealed.

Overall, decent movie. Good action, OK acting, alright twist ending. However, any movie where Dennis Quaid is the action star can never be that great.

Sigourney Weaver played the above mentioned news producer. Performance = 1 out of 5 stars.

What’s ironic about this whole situation is that I was thinking of her performance in the movie Dave, and then I’d pretty much say that Vantage Point could be a modern re-make of the movie (with much more action involved).

There Will Be Blood

February 11, 2008

Second movie of the past weekend – There Will Be Blood.

In his ruthless pursuit of wealth, misanthropic oilman Daniel Plainview tricks a local farmer into signing away his valuable drilling rights and rejects his own son, H.W., when the boy loses his hearing in an accident. As he becomes increasingly isolated and unstable, Daniel places his trust in a vagrant claiming to be his half-brother, and finds his position unsettled by H.W.’s return and the growing popularity of the farmer’s son, now an evangelical preacher.

Probably not one I would have chosen to see by myself, but a friend wanted to see it, so I went.

I think this is a movie that I would say is very well done, but I would be hesitant to recommend to people. Or, at least, I’d recommend with certain qualifications.

Regardless, the movie is nominated for 8 Academy Awards and I won’t be surprised if it comes away a big winner. Daniel Day Lewis should definitely win for Best Actor.

Senior Citizens and Me

February 8, 2008

Went and saw The Savages this afternoon.

Seeing it at an “older” theater was alright (was the only theater showing this movie). I definitely missed my reclining chair and the large number of senior citizens watching the movie with me was quite odd. Especially since the movie is about old age and being put in a nursing home.

Awkward.

Decent movie though.

Pick Me

January 19, 2008

First movie in the theater seen this year – Atonement.

I’ve recently been thinking about relationships. A blog I found recently asked the question, “What is the goal of relationships?” The original answer that was discussed between this guy and his friend was happiness. But a day later, he came back and said that happiness should not be the goal because if you’re looking outside of yourself, to someone/something else for happiness, you’re not going to find it. Which makes sense. The whole, love yourself before you can love someone else spiel.

So… he comes back and says that he believes the goal of relationships is to see the world through someone else’s eyes. To experience things in a whole new way.

I’m not sure I buy into that, since it is so abstract and I really can’t get my mind around that. Regardless… during this movie, I was thinking about the concept of “one true love” and what my thoughts are about it. I am still not convinced that there is not one person out there who is perfect for me. I’d like to believe there isn’t because that would take a lot of stress out of the whole equation, but then I just feel like I would be settling.

Ugh.

Anyway… my thoughts at the end of the movie: I want a Robbie. I want a Cecelia. I want someone who wants me back.

This song by Blue October has an incredible chorus which says:

Well I’ll keep calling you to see,
If you’re sleeping, are you dreaming and
If you’re dreaming, are you dreaming of me.
I can’t believe,
You actually picked… me.

Movies

September 26, 2007

What do you do when you’re bored at work?

Seeing as Friday is my last day on my project, and Monday was the last day I had to give training, I have very little work to do (other than look for a new job). So… time to enhance my personal Excel spreadsheets – today I worked on my workout schedule and the movies I own.

I would show you how much weight I can’t lift, but… that’s no fun.

Southland Tales

September 25, 2007

If this doesn’t get you excited, then I don’t know what will.

Though, the cast is a little odd to me: The Rock, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sean William Scott, Justin Timberlake.

Here’s hoping that I understand this movie!
